simoncino (aka nick anthony) from italian super edit label no more hits crosses the atlantic and finds a new home with on the prowls sub-label party breaks. what immediately stands out upon first listen is the production style, not being able to tell what is a sample and what has been replayed… much like tensnakes mega hit. the simoncino sound is firmly rooted in proto-house and 80s r&b. with ingredients like ancient drum machines, arpeggiated melodies, and cheap 80s pads, his concoction boils over with a certain cheekiness that makes listeners grin from ear to ear. all four tracks are subtle hits in their own right. excellent ep!

the esteemed mr. nick chacona, he of moodmusic, hector works, and 2020 vision fame, makes his stunning solo debut on wurst. we reckon >slice of life< is the mans finest work to date, the culmination of the past decadeÆs worth of his most excellent musical output. taking in elements from both disco and house, the song fits quite neatly beween the two genres, with its slow burning groove, rich synth textures, and a soaring, ecstatic synth solo to end all synth solos.

nick holder continues an excellent run in 2008 with this remix package of his single time, a cut already championed by gilles peterson. featuring sacha on vocals, this deep vocal house cut gets the remix treatment from two europeans, namely wahoo (aka dixon & georg levin) and manuel tur./ ltd backstock

plastik is a new label for electronic experimental music / minimal music. the records are shrinked very noticeably in plastik and limited to vinyl and only 300 copies! early support comes from the likes of cess (cocoon/rocketsauce), dj koze, jens zimmermann (snork), j³rgen von krebs (monkeys club), daze maxim (hello?repeat), lars sommerfeld (fumakilla/ two faces) and bengreen (mikatronic).

one of rough trades island 50th anniversary selection - 50 crucial titles, specially selected by us to highlight the unique contribution this seminal label has made to british music since 1959. the results of nick drakes solo sessions were as harrowing and stark as anything by robert johnson or charley patton. enclosed in an inner world of psychological distress, drake recorded pink moons dispatches from a private hell that was simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. both the lyrics and the melodic motifs are pared to the bone here, their simplicity making them all the more immediately striking. the most nakedly emotional and disturbing moment is probably parasite, a visceral but mysterious account of a disconsolate soul roaming through the world in search of succor, with drake taking the starring role, ultimately offering, take a look, you may see me in the dirt. this was the end of the road for nick drake in more ways than one, but just the beginning for the scores of songwriters subsequently inspired by his bleak but beautiful visions.
